- What is the Diploma in Human Resources Management?
- A program of 10 courses providing essential management foundation
skills and knowledge with particular emphasis on relating practitioner
principles, policies and procedures to “real world” situations.

- Why Participate in the Diploma in Human
Resources Management?
- Human resources management is a system of interrelated activities
such as training and development, compensation management and labour
relations that work towards satisfying organizational goals and objectives.
Typically, managers in smaller organizations are responsible for these
activities in addition to their other operational responsibilities.
In larger organizations, the human resources department generally has
subject specialists who oversee each functional area. Whatever the size
of the organization, individuals responsible for managing a group of
employees should have a practical understanding of management tools
and techniques to effectively utilize their most important resource
- their people.

- Who is the target audience for the courses?
- This program of 10 courses is designed to meet the learning needs
of individuals who currently work in a human resources environment or
who have ambition to do so.

- Who will benefit from this Diploma?
- Those who are currently working in the Human Resources field and are
working towards their CHRP designation will benefit from obtaining the
Diploma.

- Where do I take the courses?
- The courses are offered through the Office of Open Learning, University
of Guelph. Face-to-face courses are offered on campus in the fall, winter
and summer semesters in evening classes. The online course can be completed
anywhere you have internet access.

- How long are the courses?
- The classroom-based courses are 30 hours (10 weeks) long. The final
exams are scheduled for the week following the final class. The online
elective course is 12 weeks in duration.

- When can I start?
- You may start in any semester, although Human Resources Administration
is strongly recommended as the first course.

Diploma?
- You will need to successfully complete 10 courses to earn your diploma.

- How long does it take to finish the Diploma
in Human Resources Management?
- You have up to 10 years to complete the diploma.

- How much time will I need to devote to my
course each week?
- Each course involves 3 hours of class time per week and you should
plan on a minimum of an additional 6 hours per week to complete assignments
and readings.

- Can the courses be taken in any order?
- The courses can be completed in any order, although it is strongly
recommended that Human Resources Administration be completed early in
your course of study. Finance and Accounting Concepts is not an introductory
course, so either a background in accounting or the course Introduction
to Finance & Accounting is strongly recommended.

- Where do I get the required textbooks
for my distance education course?
- You can purchase the required textbooks from either the University
of Guelph bookstore or the Campus Co-op bookstore.

- How do I register for
a course?
- You can register online using the online
registration form. Click on the Register tab on this website.
For your convenience you may also register in other ways:
By fax, complete the downloadable registration
form and fax it to 519-824-1114.
By phone, call 519-767-5000.
By mail, complete the registration form
and mail it to:

- When should I register?
- Many of our courses fill quickly so you should register early. In
some courses we will accept registration up until the course starts
but you should remember that we do not send out confirmation letters
until we receive course payment. Register early!

- What
are the registration deadlines?
- Each offering has its own registration deadline. Please see the individual
course descriptions or contact us for more information. It is advisable
to register early as some courses have limits and fill quickly.

- Are there restrictions on who is eligible
to take courses through the Office of Open Learning?
- Generally there are no restrictions for individuals wishing to register
in continuing education courses, workshops, conferences and distance
education courses. However, it is best that you read the course description
carefully, including the information on the intended target audience,
to ensure the course is right for you.

- What English proficiency level is
required to take these courses?
- The Diploma is facilitated in English. In order to understand fully
the course materials and increase your chance of success, we strongly
suggest that you have an English proficiency equivalent to a score of
89 iBT (Internet-based TOEFL) with no band less than 21 or successful
completion of the advanced level of the English Language Certificate
Program at the University of Guelph.

- What happens if I can't get my assignment
in on time?
- It is important for you to be aware of due dates so you can complete
and submit your assignments in a timely fashion. Instructors may use
their discretion to deduct marks for late assignments. Contact your
instructor in advance of the due date if possible, if you are unable
to complete your assignment on time. Medical documentation may be requested
if illness has prevented you from keeping up with your course.

- What if I decide a course isn't for me?
- If you change your mind about taking a course you have registered
for, you will need to let us know as soon as possible. Fax a completed
Drop Form to notify
us of your intent to cancel your enrolment. In order to receive a refund,
the form must be received before the beginning of the second class.
Should you decide to not continue after the course drop date, you MUST
still complete and send in a Drop Form, informing us of your intentions,
to prevent receiving a grade of "F" on your academic records. Drop forms
are not accepted after the 40th class day (Friday of week 8 in each
course)

- What is the course cancellation policy?

The Office of Open Learning reserves the right to cancel any scheduled
course offering. Registrants will be notified of the cancellation
in advance of the start date and will receive a full refund.
Registered participants who wish to withdraw from a course must provide
the Office of Open Learning with a completed Drop
Form. Failure to notify the Office of Open Learning may
result in a failing grade being recorded on your academic record.
Refunds, less a $36.00 administration fee will be issued provided
written notification of withdrawal, course materials and the income
tax receipt are received by the Office of Open learning prior
to the start of the second class. Usually the income tax
receipts are mailed out after the drop date so should you drop before
the second class, your receipt may not be sent to you. However, in
the event of the receipts be mailed out prior to the drop date, your
original income tax receipt must be received by the Office of Open
Learning for a refund to be issued. Failure to take part in a course
does not constitute notification of withdrawal and will result in
forfeiture of the entire course fee.

- I have finished all my courses. How do
I request my Diploma?

The Diploma in Human Resources Management will be issued to those
students who successfully pass all 10 required courses. To request
the diploma, a signed letter must be mailed to the program manager
after successful completion of all 10 courses. Be sure the letter
includes the following information.
- Your name, the way you wish it to appear on the diploma
- The address you wish to have the diploma mailed to
- Any letters issued by the Office of Open Learning stating you
have been granted transfer of credit from another institution.
- If you require a transcript, include this in your letter and a
cheque payable to the University of Guelph or credit card information.
The transcript fee is $10.00.

- What is the grade structure for the courses
and what is the structure for granting of diplomas?
- Assignment of course grades in the Diploma in Human Resources Management
program is according to the following standards:
80-100 (A) Excellent
70-79 (B) Good
60-69 (C) Acceptable
50-59 (D) Minimally Acceptable
0-49 (F) Fail

- What are the academic requirements for
the CHRP designation through the HRPAO?
- For those who wish to write the CHRP National Knowledge exam, an overall
average of 70 percent with no individual course being lower than 65
percent is required. The elective psychology courses are not included
in this average.

- Can I take courses outside of the Diploma and
get credit for them?
- Yes. There are two different ways. Only ONE of these
two ways can be used. Two courses from another institution can be used
toward the Diploma requirements OR 50% (5 courses)
from approved
undergraduate courses can be used toward the Diploma. To have outside
courses considered, a written request asking for a transfer of credit
needs to be sent to the Program
Manager along with an official transcript sent from the academic
institution directly to the attention of the Manager. back

- Are Open Learning courses tax deductible?
- Tax receipts are issued. In Canada, the tuition portion of your course
fees is income tax deductible.

- Is there any form of financial assistance
available for these courses?
- You may be eligible to receive a bursary award towards an Office of
Open Learning continuing education activity and/or Open Learning program.
